In 2018, five sailors from very different backgrounds and origins connected in Miami and started to sail Finns together. Soon after, the Miami Finn Fleet was created. Weekend Races started to be organized, and the fleet grew. In 2019, the Fleet made the Coconut Grove Sailing Club its home and the support of the club was instrumental for the expansion of the class in Miami. CGSC, the only club dedicated exclusively to sailing in Miami, has a lot of experience in organizing world class events. In 2020, the Finn North American Championships, was the first major Finn Class event organized by the club and it sparked the idea and desire of bringing the Gold Cup to Miami.
